Dave:
Dealing with you has been such a wonderful experience. I did not tell my
husband that another dog was on the way. When I did - just a few days before
Gunner's arrival - he thought I was crazy for buying an unseen dog from unseen
individuals and I'll be getting a scrawny, sickly puppy if one arrived at all, etc. I
told him I just had a good feeling about the Ports and knew everything was
going to be fine - and it was!
<snip>
We think he is a very expressive and bright dog. His little head turns to the side
when you talk to him. He barks when he wants something, puts his paw on your
leg when he wants to be picked up, walks down the hall with his food bowl in his
mouth when its past meal time. He is getting "sit" and "come." I don't know at
this age how much of this is purposeful on his part, but I like to think it is :^) Of
course, he is doing all the regular puppy things like running laps in the house,
trying to chew everything, drinking from the "big dog" water bowl in the kitchen
by placing his 2 front feet actually in the huge bowl. We assume this will stop
when his feet simply won't fit in the bowl anymore.
He is getting along very well with my other dogs. My Golden Irish, Sam (4 years
old), has been great with him - showing lots of patience. Sam will come walking
into the living room dragging Gunner behind him - Gunner's teeth being tightly
fastened around Sam's ankle. Sam just stands there and looks at us with a
"Can you please get it off me now?" look. I thought that Sam would be the
jealous one, but he has been great.
My border collie, Nellie (just about 2 years old), however, was a much different
story. When Gunner came home she barked and growled. She wanted nothing
to do with him. I had never heard her growl before. We let her sniff him for a
few days through the kennel or when he was in our laps. Slowly she has
warmed up to him and they play together - giving Sam a break from having to
play with Nellie. Gunner was afraid of her at first and would not go near her.
Now he barks right in her face when he wants to play with her, or if she has the
toy at the moment. According to Robert via Animal Planet, this is a typical
reaction for Border Collies that I did not know about. They don't accept "the
new sheep in the barn" right away.
Never fear - Gunner is never alone with the other dogs. Nellie plays rough and
he is too little for that now. It will be quite a while before the three of them can
romp together without a human right on their trail.
My husband absolutely loves Gunner, as I knew he would once he got over not
being involved in the process. Robert has been great about coming home from
school and doing all the dog chores. I am having him really take responsibility
for Gunner every day. This is a great experience for him.
We will send pictures. Hope all the puppies are doing as well as Gunner, and
that you, Leisa, Britta and Hunther are enjoying the return or calm and quiet to
your home.

Haus Leisa German Shepherds' Testimonial
On the "About Us" page, I wrote that "(German Shepherds) are the light of my
life, and I want other people to enjoy them as much as I do." In at least one case
I seem to have succeeded beyond all expectations! This is an edited E-mail that
I received from the buyers of "Abel vom Haus Leisa," call name "Gunner:"
